The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on the 24th day of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative talents when she was a young girl because of her Aunt Denise. Her aunt was an overnight nurse so that she could have the chance to learn about art theatre or literature. DuVernay quickly fell in love when she showed her that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through experience that art is a great tool to engage in activism. DuVernay developed a social aware through her mother. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma, and later directed an documentary on King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was still at university. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to look-out and search for the house for a specific member of the Jury. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio straight out of high school. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. In addition to PR her agency also launched several lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
